Meet John Montross

John Montross has been training professionally for over 50 years. He moved to North Carolina in 1980 after enjoying success with his training facility in Michigan. Upon becoming a Tarheel, he joined the North Carolina Quarter Horse Association and began what has been a long-standing and close-knit relationship with the organization, serving as NCQHA President, Executive Vice President, District Vice President and NCQHYA Youth Advisor. Acting as NCQHA President in 1988, he helped to create the North Carolina Amateur Quarter Horse Association- one of the largest and most efficiently managed Amateur associations in the nation. In 2003, John's numerous and notable contributions were rewarded through his induction into the NCQHA Hall of Fame, and he continues to serve of the Board of Directors. John has also been an AQHA Professional Horseman since the formation of the program and is a certified Judge.
John's well-deserved reputation as a superior horseman and compassionate humanitarian placed him at the helm of the 1999 Special Olympics World Games which were held in North Carolina. He proudly accepted the sizable task--and equally sizable honor-- of managing all details pertaining to the planning and execution of the equestrian events for 187 athletes representing 165 countries.
Today, John specializes in breeding and training All-Around performance horses of exceptional quality at his facility in Chapel Hill with his wife, Laura. They have created numerous ROM's, Superiors and AQHA Champions in Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Equitation, Horsemanship, Trail and Reining, and have qualified many horses for the AQHA World Show, as well. John has placed 6th in Calf Roping and has won the Junior Hunter Under Saddle at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress.
Outside the arena, both John and Laura are passionate about total-body health and wellness. Thanks to their affiliation with a ground-breaking health and wellness company, they are able to coach, mentor, and inspire others to a healthier lifestyle, thereby transforming them both in and out of the saddle. In 2012, John was chosen as a finalist out of 4500 competitors in the IsaBody Challenge in Phoenix.
